The iPhone XS just went for a swim in the ultimate water test, guess how it did
Water, beer, wine – this iPhone XS test took the handset to its aqauatic limit.
The new iPhone XS is water-resistant, says Apple, but now that claim has been tested to the extreme. Can you guess how the handset faired in the wet?
The water loving guys over at CNET have taken their shiny new iPhone XS handsets and dunked them, again and again. The tests were extensive and not exclusively reserved to water alone with beer and wine on the list too – the more likely culprit for iPhone wetting.
Apple says the iPhone XS is IP68 water and dust resistant meaning it should be able to withstand submersion in water up to two metres for up to half an hour.
The best Amazon Echo deals for October 2018
Price drops aplenty on the Alexa-powered Amazon devices
Amazon sure loves its Echo devices, and there are now more Amazon Echo speakers to choose from than ever before. It also loves running deals on these gadgets, so you can often get them for less than their already very competitive asking prices.
We’re now up to the second generation of the Amazon Echo, the more capable and better-sounding Amazon Echo Plus, and the smaller Amazon Echo Dot (keep up at the back).
There’s also the Amazon Echo Show but we’re going to keep those on a separate page.
The Amazon Echo and the on-board Alexa assistant have helped to transform the smart home scene. Whichever one you buy, you’re entering a world of information, fun, and useful help – from setting timers to listening to the radio.
These clever devices can control other gadgets in your smart home too, as well as interact with third-party apps and services. Whether you want to order a pizza or a taxi, your Amazon Echo can help.
THE BEST AMAZON ECHO DOT DEALS
The dinky Amazon Echo Dot isn’t the best in terms of sound quality, though you can plug it into a bigger speaker if you need to. It is the most compact and cutest Echo around though, and can blend perfectly into any room in the house.
Samsung Galaxy S10 screen could be the game change we’ve been waiting for
Going flat screen isn’t just a move that helped TVs make a jump forward
The new Samsung Galaxy S10 is due out early next year and has already been puffed up by Samsung as its phone that will take a big step forward and it looks like the screen could play a big part in that according to new leaks.
According to prolific leakster Ice Universe we can expect Samsung to unveil a new type of flat display on the 5.8-inch Galaxy S10. Yup, the company that made the curved edge AMOLED display a trend-setting feature for its flagships could be changing again. Will it lead the way though?
The short answer is no. This is a feature that will be reserved for the budget version of the S10, apparently, while the two top-end models with still feature curved displays at 5.8- and 6.4-inches.
So while the flat display could be a winner for those that find the frankly impractical screen warping curved edges of the Samsung Galaxy handsets annoying, it will mean sacrificing other cutting-edge specs. That said you’ll probably be saving a lot of money too. We’ll have to wait until early 2019 for the full reveal of the new range of Galaxy S10 handsets to learn everything.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro camera looks mind-boggling in this new image
Leak alert for the new Mate 20 Pro with new camera system
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is surely set to arrive soon and now another leak has shown off what we may be able to expect, including a potential P20 Pro beating new camera setup.
- Huawei Mate 20 Pro set to get whopping 6.9-inch display
- Huawei’s Kirin 980 just smoked the Samsung Galaxy S9 for speed and battery life
Good old Slashleaks has revealed a new image of what the Huawei Mate 20 Pro may look like. As you can see there is a novel new camera system which uses the triple lens setup but in a square style layout where the flash is the fourth corner.
Why align lenses like this? Perhaps the variation in perspectives helps to build a better 3D model? Or maybe it’s just cheaper or easier to assemble that way to make more room for things like a bigger battery. Or perhaps it’s all rumour error, of course.
The rear placed fingerprint sensor suggests this could offer an even bigger screen than the current notch-toting Huawei P20 Pro. Perhaps this will also have that pop-up selfie camera that allows for a true all-screen display.
While it’s all rumour at the moment, the Mate 20 Lite has already appeared on sale in some countries so expect the Mate 20 Pro to follow soon.

Upgrade your home audio: why now is the time to go multi-room
Once you’ve added AirPlay 2-compatible speakers in every room you want, you can send audio straight from your iPhone, and control the volume of each independently
In association with
As little as a decade ago, you could only realistically get multi-room audio if you were filthy rich.
Multi-room audio systems were complex, usually bespoke, and required such dramatic changes to the fabric of your house that it was often simplest to implement when building from scratch. The key technology for the iPhone is AirPlay. There are other options – Sonos, most notably, though some manufacturers can do clever things with Bluetooth, or you could consider peer-to-peer apps – but the big advantage to AirPlay is that it’s built right into the system.Generally speaking, you can send audio from any app or game through AirPlay speakers, whereas if you choose another system you will probably have to use a dedicated app, which can give you less flexibility. Unless this dedicated app specifically supports Spotify, say, you can’t play Spotify in your multi-room audio setup until the manufacturer does that deal and implements it.
And actually, if you specifically want multi-room audio – rather than simply wireless audio streaming from your iPhone to just one speaker – then you have to use a speaker or other system that supports AirPlay 2, and it’s this new evolution of the technology that means we can properly talk about multi-room audio straight from your iPhone now.
It’s supported on iPhones from iOS 11.4 – so that’s everything back to the 5s – and manufacturers such as Bang & Olufsen, Libratone, Naim, Beats and of course Apple itself with its HomePod are adding AirPlay 2 some to their speaker and amp line-up.Of course, you want to put a speaker in all the rooms of your house or flat where you want to be able to listen to music streamed from your iPhone, but here you have options.

L’Oréal UV Sense
L’Oréal’s UV Sense is a tiny sensor capable of detecting ultraviolet exposure that’s small enough to wear comfortably on your fingernail. The sensor itself is battery-free and includes an NFC antenna, a temperature sensor, and a UV sensor.
That sensor, which can store up to three months worth of data, passes information to the accompanying app whenever the wearer holds the device close to his or her smartphone. The app keeps track of your exposure levels and can provide tips for managing sun intake.
While the UV Sense is designed to be worn on your nail, L’Oréal will also be releasing accessories so that users can wear it in different ways, too. The beauty company worked with designer and entrepreneur Yves Béhar on the product, in part why it resembles nail art rather than a piece of wearable technology.
Lenovo Smart Display
Lenovo’s Google Assistant-powered Smart Display feels like a sleeker, more attractive Amazon Echo Show.
However, there are three key advantages Lenovo’s Smart Display has over the Echo Show: It can play YouTube videos (unlike Amazon’s device), it includes a larger screen, and it has a more polished design that more easily blends into the home.
Honda 3E Robotics Concept
Honda’s new concept robots may be just as cute as they are useful. At CES, the company showcased its 3E Robotics concept, which includes several robot companions all designed to serve different functions.Robot 3E-A18 is Honda’s social empathy robot. The company says it’s meant to represent the idea that robots can support people by providing a sense of compassion and understanding. In a demo at CES, the roving robot’s glowing face frequently changed its expression as it greeted the crowd. Honda’s 3E-B18, comparatively, is a robotic chair concept, while 3E-C18 includes cargo space for transporting materials.
Samsung’s “The Wall” TV
According to Samsung, TVs shouldn’t have to be just one size. That’s the idea behind its new 146-inch TV called The Wall, which the company is positioning as the first “modular TV.”
My Special Aflac Duck
Many smart robotic toys are designed with education in mind. But My Special Aflac Duck has a very different but nonetheless important job: The interactive toy, developed by research and development workshop Sproutel, was created to provide comfort to children diagnosed with cancer.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon and Yoga
Lenovo’s long-running ThinkPad lineup is getting some worthwhile new additions at this year’s CES. Both new ThinkPad computers include a dazzling HDR display, a built-in physical webcam cover, and far-field microphones for speaking to Amazon’s Alexa and Microsoft’s Cortana. The two laptops also run on Intel’s newest eighth-generation processors.
The most impressive feature by far is the laptops’ HDR support, which makes colors look bold and vivid, arguably adding much more noticeable improvements than 4K resolution.
Vuzix Blade Augmented Reality Glasses
Considering Alexa has made its way into just about every Internet-connected product, it was only a matter of time before the digital butler arrived in smart glasses. The Vuzix Blade augmented reality glasses will support Alexa so that wearers can ask for things like the weather and directions. The Vuzix Blade’s display also sits more prominently in the wearer’s field of view than Google Glass and looks much more crisp and colorful. If developers create compelling apps that blend Alexa’s capabilities and augmented reality, the Blade AR glasses could have some promising potential.
Byton Concept Car
Byton wants your car to feel more like your living room rather than a just a means of transportation. That’s the idea behind its concept car, which the company says will be launching in the U.S. in 2020.
The concept vehicle’s most striking characteristic is its gigantic screen, which stretches across the entire dashboard. The car will also include facial recognition so that it can identify the driver and load his or her settings as he or she enters the vehicle.
Movi Phone
As smartphone screens have gotten larger, they’ve become our go-to entertainment devices. But there are still many times in which you may want to watch movies or TV shows on a much larger screen when a TV isn’t nearby. That’s where the Movi smartphone comes in: The $599 Android phone includes an integrated projector that can project 720p videos.
Philips SmartSleep
Philips’ headband isn’t designed to help you get more sleep. Rather, it’s meant to help you get the most out of your sleep. The headband emits a tone that the company says improves slow wave sleep, the stage in the sleep cycle at which brain waves and breathing slow to their lowest levels.
